This B4 envelope features a colourful depiction of the Australian continent in the postage paid area.
The term Terra Australis is Latin for “Southern land”. The idea that a great expanse of land was situated in the southern regions was first introduced by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle.
Reference to Terra Australis appeared on maps in the 15th century. Over time belief in the idea seemed to wane, although some maps of the 18th century still marked Terra Australis.
Discovery of lands that would later become Australia and New Zealand supported the notion that the great southern land mass earlier referred to by Aristotle was actually only within the polar region and not as extensive as first believed. However, in the early 19th century British explorer Mathew Flinders named Australia after Terra Australis.
